The Process for Handling Cases Requiring Corrections, Retractions, and Editorial Expressions of Concern
Java Nursing Journal (JNJ) ensures that all published articles are handled in accordance with guidance from the Committee on Publication Ethics ( COPE ).
The journal is committed to safeguarding the integrity of the scholarly record for all published and prospective publications. Whenever a significant error, inaccuracy, misleading statement, or distorted report is identified, appropriate action will be taken promptly and transparently. Where an investigation establishes that a publication contains serious errors or misconduct that invalidate its findings, the article may be retracted. Any correction, retraction, or editorial expression of concern will be made clearly identifiable to readers and, where applicable, indexing services.
Errors identified in published articles may be addressed through a correction, corrigendum, or erratum when the Editor-in-Chief considers that readers should be formally informed of the error and its correction. The correction notice will clearly identify and cite the original article and will describe the nature of the correction. Where appropriate, the correction notice may be published as a separate journal item and electronically linked to the original article.
Retraction may be considered when serious errors invalidate the findings or conclusions of an article. Retraction may also be issued where there is reliable evidence of publication or research misconduct , including plagiarism, duplicate publication, fabricated or falsified data, unethical research, or other serious breaches of publication ethics. In accordance with COPE guidance, Java Nursing Journal (JNJ) applies the following procedures when a retraction is confirmed:
- A retraction notice titled “Retraction: [Article Title]” will be published and clearly identified as a retraction.
- The retraction notice will identify the article concerned and explain the reason for the retraction in a transparent and objective manner where legally and ethically appropriate.
- The electronic version of the retraction notice will be linked to the original article, and the original article will be linked back to the retraction notice.
- The original article will normally remain accessible as part of the scholarly record but will be clearly marked as RETRACTED.
- Where technically feasible, the HTML and PDF versions will include a clear retraction watermark or notice so that readers can immediately identify the article's retracted status.
Where substantial concerns arise regarding the integrity, reliability, or ethical conduct of a submitted or published article, the editors may issue an Editorial Expression of Concern.
An expression of concern may be appropriate when available evidence raises serious concerns but the investigation remains inconclusive, when relevant institutional investigations have not reached a final determination, or when sufficient reliable information is not yet available to determine whether a correction or retraction is warranted.
In exceptional circumstances, an Editorial Expression of Concern may also be issued while an investigation is ongoing when the matter is sufficiently serious and a final conclusion is unlikely to be reached within a reasonable period. The expression of concern will be clearly linked to the article concerned.
All cases involving corrections, retractions, or expressions of concern will be evaluated objectively by the Editor-in-Chief and/or designated editors . Where necessary, the journal may request information from authors, reviewers, institutions, research ethics committees, funding organizations, or other relevant parties. Editorial decisions will be based on the available evidence, the integrity of the scholarly record, and applicable COPE guidance.
